On August 20,1945, Westye R. Bakke founded the Sub-Zero Freezer Company Inc. He chose the name Sub-Zero because his freezers were the first to meet strict quality standards for below-zero safety in freezing food.
By 1947, Sub-Zero was building state-of-the-art upright freezers, an industry first in creating all-aluminum appliances with separate inside doors.
In the late 1950's, Sub-Zero introduced the first ever cabinet flush units and customizable front panels.
